Former Scottish Premiership player Alan Hutton believes that Celtic transfer guru Nick Hammond deserves to be under serious threat after a calamitous 2020/21 campaign.
Hammond to blame?
The Bhoys are currently 21 points behind arch-rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership table – albeit with three games in hand. But new signings made in the summer have not delivered.
As Celtic’s Director of Football, Hammond oversaw deals that brought Shane Duffy, Vasilis Barkas and Albian Ajeti to the club – all of whom have struggled greatly and cost a considerable amount of money to bring to Parkhead.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton laid the blame at the door of Hammond and believes that questions need to be asked over his job performance over the past six months, following reports that suggested just that.
“By the way, we’re talking big-money signings here, we’re not talking about young boys that they have taken a risk with, not cost too much and they’ve maybe tried to sell on, we’re talking about big money for Scottish Football,” he said.
“It’s not worked out, you just have to look at Villa, for example, with the sporting director (Jesus Garcia Pitarch). He brought in 12 players that didn’t work, got sacked the next year.
This is a high-pressure job that they’re in, dealing with big teams, big signings, big money and it’s not worked.
“The signings that have come in have not been good enough – Duffy, big fee, big wages, and he’s looked a shadow of the player that we’ve seen in past seasons.
“So, these things haven’t worked out and normally when that happens, your head’s on the line.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
Hutton raises some good points about the summer signings, and that they simply have not been up to the standards that the Parkhead faithful expect. Will Hammond be scrutinised by the Green Brigade?
Time will tell. Nevertheless, Celtic will want to put this season behind them sooner rather than later, and perhaps getting rid of Hammond is the first step.
