Former Celtic icon Frank McAvennie believes that Albian Ajeti will be dropped in favour of Odsonne Edouard when the Hoops return to action.
The 23-year-old has been featuring regularly in Neil Lennon’s side after Edouard contracted COVID-19 and suffered an injury earlier in the campaign (TransferMarkt), and has scored five goals from nine Premiership appearances so far.
Edouard was accused of being “lethargic” due to his recent slump in form, but media in France showered the U21 international with praise after scoring a brace during his side’s 3-1 victory over Switzerland on Monday (via Fotmob).
Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie believes that the Frenchman’s recent form will force Lennon to bring him back into the side at Ajeti’s expense, who Chris Sutton described as a “ruthless finisher” (cited by This is Futbol).
“It was great to see Edouard scoring two goals,” he said. ”I am sure Edouard will come in. He will walk straight back into that eleven and that is no disrespect to Ajeti.
“It is similar to Sebastien Haller at West Ham, he has had his chance and when you do not take it you cannot complain.
“This is going to be another hard game and you need the likes of Edouard and Tom Rogic to hold up the ball. Ajeti is a goalscorer but he cannot hold the ball as well as the other two.”
Transfer Tavern take
It will be great for Celtic supporters to see Edouard firing on all cylinders once more, after finding the net 27 times in 45 outings last season (TransferMarkt).
But Ateji, who made the move to Parkhead from West Ham in the summer, will feel hard done by as his league record suggest he has not done much wrong.
McAvennie raises a good point though that Edouard will have forced Lennon’s hand, and leave him with little choice but to pick him.
