Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard may be tempted about the prospect of taking charge of Celtic, if Neil Lennon leaves his post.
Lampard to Parkhead?
Those were the words of Harry Redknapp, who reacted after his nephew was sacked by the club he served for so long on Monday, following a difficult spell in charge of the London club. From 84 matches in charge, he managed to average a points-per-game tally of 1.75 after taking the role in 2019. (TransferMarkt).
Meanwhile, at Parkhead, Lennon has been called into question by supporters after a calamitous campaign, with his team currently 23 points behind arch-rivals Rangers, with ten-in-a-row now hugely unlikely, if not impossible.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Redknapp believes that the prospect of managing the Bhoys may be a head-turner for Lampard, following in the footsteps of his ex-England teammate Steven Gerrard.
“That’s certainly something that would interest any manager,” he said. “It’s a great football club to come and manage, that’s for sure.
“Neil Lennon is still there so I wouldn’t want to talk too much about someone else taking his job but obviously it would be interesting to see Frank in direct opposition to Steven Gerrard.
“I don’t know whether, if the Celtic job came up, it would be something that would interest Frank. Obviously, Neil Lennon is still in charge and I wouldn’t want to see him lose his job.
“Would Frank want to jump straight back in if it did become available? I wouldn’t know.
“But you could certainly see the appeal.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
With the pressure mounting on Lennon, Lampard’s appointment as the new manager would be welcomed by segments of the Parkhead faithful and would be the opportunity to start from a clean slate.
However, with chaos going on behind the scenes and many off the field changes reportedly taking place in the summer, it begs the question of whether Lennon comes under that category.
It may be a while until all is revealed. But, with the former Liverpool and Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez also without a club, this may be the best time to get a new face in, if that is Dermot Desmond’s plan.
