Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has warned Celtic that a possible decision that may be made by majority shareholder Dermot Desmond could cause huge controversy.
Desmond to act
This comes after reports emerged suggesting that his son, Ross, could be handed a significant role behind the scenes at Parkhead.
Before becoming the club’s owner, Desmond had no experience in terms of operating a football club on a daily basis. Instead, his expertise specialises within investment firms such as Ventura Holdings.
Supporters have made their feelings clear recently on the decision-making at board level, with the anger being directed towards chief executive Peter Lawwell on the back of a woeful campaign and their trip to Dubai.
Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire feels that putting family members in positions of power at the club may cause further fan fury.
“It’s not necessarily a bad thing,” he said. “I don’t know enough about his background to say whether he is able to instigate a significant change.
“It could result in huge conflict at board level because what happens when things go to a vote? If he’s in the minority, where do things lead from there? He might be unhappy and use his personal relationship with his father to say there should be some more boardroom changes. We just don’t know.
“The Celtic board under Peter Lawwell has been fairly steady. Perhaps this could be part of the shake-up that it requires.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
This is not unique in football. West Ham United owner David Sullivan has his partner Eve and son Jack Sullivan work at prominent levels at the London Stadium. Like Celtic, the Hammers’ owners have also been deeply unpopular.
The Hoops will want to put this season to bed as soon as possible but the reality is that there are still plenty of games to play.
For the fans, the season cannot finish soon enough. But with reports suggesting that wholesale changes are to be made in the summer, it might be something for the Green Brigade to look forward to.
If Ross Desmond is hired by Celtic, it’s likely that more than a few eyebrows will be raised.
