Former Liverpool and Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez may not be convinced by the chance to enter the Celtic hot seat.
Benitez to Parkhead?
Those were the words of former Premier League star Rob Lee, who reacted to news (via The Daily Record) that the Spanish tactician is being linked with a move to the reigning Scottish champions.
Benitez recently left his role with Chinese club Dalian Pro, stating that the pandemic played a huge part in his decision (via ESPN).
Back in Glasgow, the pressure has been mounting on Neil Lennon after a woeful 2020/21 campaign. Before Saturday’s Scottish Premiership game against St Mirren, the Bhoys are 23 points behind arch-rivals Rangers in the standings with hopes of achieving 10-in-a-row slowly fading.
“He’s in the position where he’s got his choice of jobs – he hasn’t got to take a job, he can decide what he wants to do,” Lee told This is Futbol.
“I can see something happening [at Celtic] and I think they need a big-name manager, really, for Celtic, for Scottish football and to bring Celtic back. But, it is a two-horse race, it always is.
“So it’s whether he fancies that sort of chapter in his life and living up in Glasgow, as I say, he can have his choice, he’s a very lucky guy.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
We are sure that Celtic supporters would welcome Benitez with open arms, particularly after what he has achieved over the course of his managerial career.
But whether the temptation of Scottish football is too great, or small, remains to be seen. Lee is right – Benitez has a lot of thinking to do regarding his next step.
With reports of widespread changes set to take place this summer, time will tell whether Lennon is one of them, and Benitez makes the move north of the border.
