The chaos surrounding Celtic manager Neil Lennon’s future may hinder the Bhoys’ opportunity to sign Preston North End defender Ben Davies.
Lennon putting transfers at risk
Those were the words of former Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan after being heavily linked with the 25-year-old for most of the month.
The Hoops have allegedly been impressed with the defensive displays that the 6 foot 1 centre-back has been putting in, and he recently turned down a new deal at Deepdale with his existing contract due to expire in the summer.
However, the Green Brigade have carried out protests over Lennon’s position at the club as they sit 23 points behind arch-rivals Rangers, with changes expected this summer and constant controversy emerging from the club’s Dubai trip.
Speaking with Football Insider, Whelan believes that Lennon’s uncertain future could hinder the team’s progress in the transfer market.
“You kind of think Celtic should have the draw over a club like Bournemouth,” he said.
“They are a big, big club who will be in Europe next season but then again, look at how things have gone this season.
“Is Neil Lennon going to be there next year? That is the biggest issue. There are a lot of question marks at Celtic right now regarding their main players and their backroom staff. Who knows what is going to happen because there is a lot of ironing out to do.
“That could sway Davies to go to a more settled club like Bournemouth, who are pushing to get back into the Premier League – the league where everyone wants to be.
“It is a big decision for Davies and not an easy one.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
Whelan raises some really strong points here. New players who are considering a move to Parkhead will be fully aware of the situation at the club, both on and off the pitch.
It may be a struggle to justify a player such as Davies coming in to play for Lennon – only for the entire management team and backroom staff to be potentially changed weeks or months later.
Davies has a huge decision to make regarding his future, but supporters will desperately be looking for a replacement for Christopher Jullien for the time being.
