Former Celtic star Chris Sutton did not hold back after the Hoops lost 4-1 to Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday night.
Sutton lambasts Celtic
Griffiths came off the bench to score for Neil Lennon’s side at 3-0 down after Lukas Julis’ hat-trick for the visitors.
In recent weeks, the 30 year-old has been recalled to the Scotland national team for the first time in two years after missing 26 games due to injury during the 2019/20 campaign (TransferMarkt).
Celtic have started this season very slowly, yet to win a game in Europe and nine points behind arch-rivals Rangers in the Premiership table (Fotmob).
Speaking with BT Sport, Sutton did not hold back and made sure his frustrations were heard about their performance on the night.
“I think that was one of the most gutless displays that I’ve ever seen from a Celtic team,” he stated. “I know a lot of Celtic fans are saying that ‘Europe doesn’t matter this year’, well I’m sorry but it absolutely does. You play for Celtic, you want to compete in Europe.
“Celtic, quite frankly tonight, did not compete in any way shape or form. It’s a dressing room this season where you have to question a lot of the players and a lot of the character of the players.
“You see Leigh Griffiths come on the pitch and gets his goal. But I look at his attitude all season. A fit Leigh Griffiths is a brilliant option for Neil Lennon – he can’t be bothered to get himself fit! He sums the dressing room up at this moment in time”
Transfer Tavern take
There surely won’t be a Celtic supporter who will disagree with a word that Sutton said about the team’s showing as a whole.
But those were certainly harsh words about the man who scored a goal on the night and has recently been recalled to play for his country.
While Sutton had every right to be frustrated about the performance, he was a bit harsh on Griffiths who, technically, did his job on the night more than anyone else.
