New Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou may be interested in bringing compatriot Mat Ryan to Parkhead, according to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crooks.

The lowdown

Brighton and Hove Albion boss Graham Potter dropped Ryan last November, promoting young Spaniard Robert Sanchez to the no. 1 role.

Ryan had been on a run of consecutive Premier League starts stretching back to January 2019.

Having fallen out of favour at the Amex Stadium, he moved to Arsenal on loan in the winter to provide back-up to Bernd Leno.

He started three league games under Mikel Arteta, who noted that he 'trains like a beast' and described him as a 'really positive' influence.

In all, Ryan has made 124 appearances in the English top-flight, racking up 28 clean sheets.

Postecoglou meanwhile knows Ryan well from his time as Australia national team boss between 2013 and 2017.

The latest

Crooks said live on talkSPORT, as quoted by Sussex Live, that Arsenal may yet look to extend Ryan's stay.

But Celtic could present Brighton with a counter-offer in the hope of reuniting the Australian duo.

The 29-year-old has one year left on his contract and is valued at £5.4million by Transfermarkt.

"There is a possibility that loan (to Arsenal) could become a permanent move," he said.

"But it has just been suggested to me that Ange Postecoglou, who managed Ryan for Australia, could also be interested in taking the Brighton goalkeeper to Celtic."

The verdict

Ryan would be a fantastic signing for Celtic, considering his experience at the top level and the troubles they had between the sticks last season - none of Scott Bain, Conor Hazard or Vasilis Barkas made the spot their own.

The difficulty, though, is Ryan's affinity with Arsenal. They're his boyhood club, and so if they did make an attempt to sign him permanently, it's hard to imagine him saying no.

That said, the report from Sussex Live also relays Ryan's comments from 2017, when he said he would 'love' Postecoglou to stay on as Australia boss, so perhaps the presence of the new Hoops gaffer could be the deciding factor if this becomes a fight for the shot-stoppers signature.
