Champions Liverpool urged to complete “dream” Harry Kane signing to launch title defense

Newly crowned Premier League Champions Liverpool are still short of a “proper goal scorer” according to Scottish great Ally McCoist.

Speaking to talkSPORT, McCoist has urged the Reds to launch a surprise “dream” move for Harry Kane this summer to aid their title defence.

Liverpool of course already boast an elite scoring threat in Mohamed Salah, who’s 28 league goals this season sees him the comfortable favourite for the golden boot. The Egyptian is in fact now the Premier League’s highest non English goal scorer, overtaking Sergio Aguero with his goal against Tottenham on Sunday.

Arne Slot’s men have benefited from great wing play overall, as Luiz Diaz and Cody Gakpo have also provided useful contributions as well. The pair have contributed 21 goals between them (12 and nine goals respectively), but it is the striker department that has misfired in front of goal.

Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez have struggled for consistency up top, scoring just six and five league goals respectively. McCoist believes that if Liverpool are to kick on and launch a successful title defence, they must go from strength to strength.

“I look at Liverpool just now and they could probably still do with an out-and-out number nine, proper goal scorer,” McCoist said on talkSPORT Breakfast.

“Diaz has been brilliant, Salah has been absolutely out of this world and they’ve got midfielders chipping in.

“I don’t see it happening, but see, if Harry Kane won the Bundesliga, which he will do, and then fancy if he would come back to England?

“I just think, for Liverpool, that would be a dream move for them.”

Unfinished business?

Kane will be buzzing from lifting his first career trophy, with Bayern poised to reclaim the Bundesliga crown. The German giants are likely to clinch the title with a win over Leipzig on May 3, and although the Englishman will be suspended for the match, his 24 goals in 29 league games has undeniably been the key factor behind the club reclaiming their title from Bayer Leverkusen.

Many have speculated that once Kane has broken his trophy jinx, he may well look to return to England to finish what he started. A Premier League great, Kane bagged 213 goals during a 10 year stint at Tottenham, becoming the top flight’s second all time record goal scorer behind Alan Shearer at 260.

Viewed as the missing piece for a top team in need of firepower, Kane was linked to moves to both Man United and Man City – before the latter signed Erling Haaland – but prizing him from Tottenham seemed an unlikely feat for a fellow Premier League club. That proved to be the case with the player instead taking this talents to the Bundesliga in a £100m deal in August of 2023.

McCoist believes that Liverpool is now that club in need.

“I think the secret for Liverpool now is to do what Manchester City arguably haven’t done, is to add to your team in a position of strength,” he added.

“When you’re in a position of strength, get yourself stronger.”

More firepower?

McCoist’s co-host and former Premier League striker Troy Deeney added the name of another top striker Liverpool could look to target – Alexander Isak. The Newcastle talisman has bagged 22 goals this season, a total only bettered by Salah, and Deeney thinks his addition would virtually guarantee Liverpool’s title defence.

“They (Liverpool) are linked to Isak as well,” Deeney said. “Just give them the title for the next years if they get that fella.”

Liverpool fans will be dreaming of a reshuffle despite celebrating a record tying 20th league title. Another title would put them clear of long time rival Man United in the record books. The club also endured a disappointing Champions League campaign, crashing out at the Round of 16 stage to PSG, and will look to improve their European fortunes next season as well.
