Leeds United: Paul Robinson warns Whites off Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths as transfer deadline nears

Leeds United: Paul Robinson warns Whites off Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths as transfer deadline nears - Leeds United

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson hopes the club do not move for Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths after links to the player emerged earlier this week.

According to Football Insider, Griffiths has become the Whites’ latest target with a week of the transfer window remaining, with the Scotland striker thought to have a price tag of £12m. Speaking to MOT Leeds News regarding the rumours, Robinson voiced his concerns over a player who he feels has not played enough recently and has not had the level of experience in the English second tier that Leeds’ alternative targets can boast – with Robinson revealing his top three choices to join Patrick Bamford in the Leeds attack.

He said: “Griffiths is a proven striker but he hasn’t had much game time and I don’t think Leeds can afford to take a chance. Leeds need someone who guarantees goals. Leeds need to narrow their risk and look for a player who’s proven in the Championship. Che Adams has done it in the Championship, Andre Gray has done it in the Championship, Dwight Gayle has done it in the Championship. Griffiths would be a risk. I think Leeds need to sign one of those three names.”

While Griffiths has shown his best form in the Scottish Premiership – scoring 31 times in the 2015/16 season – he has indeed seen his career stunt somewhat recently since taking a break from the sport due to issues regarding his mental health.

He has also seen playing opportunities dwindle upon his return, with just two league starts this season, which could explain Robinson’s opposition to his former team seeking a switch to Elland Road for the 29-year-old.

While he labelled Griffiths a ‘proven striker’, it seems the fact that Watford’s Gray and Newcastle United striker Gayle have both been part of successful promotion campaigns leaves them more tailored to Leeds’ needs in the eyes of Robinson, while Adams also joins his other preferred targets in scoring 20-plus goals within a Championship season.

Therefore, it is easy to see why Griffiths is fairly far down Robinson’s list of potential Leeds strikers – and with plenty of others having impressive previous records in the Championship, perhaps the Scotland striker would be more of a risk for Marcelo Bielsa to take this winter.
