Chelsea: Antonio Rudiger claims ‘Timo will have to deliver’ following his hand in the transfer

Antonio Rudiger has joked about his Germany teammate needing to perform well in order to live up to the defender’s recommendation to sign him.

It was recently revealed that Rudiger played a part in Timo Werner’s £45m transfer from RB Leipzig to Chelsea (via chelseafc.com). The 24-year-old looked set to join Liverpool instead, but he was convinced to snub the Reds at the last minute to make the move to London.

The centre-back recently spoke again about Werner and gave some tongue-in-cheek comments about the latest signing. ‘”Of course I was asked by Chelsea for an assessment of Timo,” he told SportBild (via Daily Mail). “I have known him for a long time and think that I can judge him very well from a human and sporting point of view.”

Rudiger has spent time playing alongside the forward for both Germany and Stuttgart and has become closer to him whilst football has been inactive.

“From next season, Timo will have to deliver, otherwise I will get in trouble from the club again afterwards,” the 27-year-old laughed.

When Werner arrives at the club in July, all eyes will be on him to see if he is capable of replicating his form from this season. For RB Leipzig this term, he has netted an astounding 32 goals and 13 assists in 44 total appearances (via Transfermarkt).

Frank Lampard has proved he is taking next season’s title race and potential Champions League run very seriously with his latest recruiting. As well as Werner, the Blues have secured the signature of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax.
