Chelsea are reportedly closing in on the signing of major summer transfer target Kai Havertz.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the Blues are the only side remaining in the race for the German’s signature. In this current financial climate, Chelsea are home-free in the quest as the only club to be able to meet Bayer Leverkusen’s asking price.

The report claims the West London side are ready to pay ‘what it will take’ to get the deal over the line, with only personal terms now due to be agreed. There has been a lot of speculation over Havertz’s transfer fee, but Ornstein has revealed it will cost Chelsea a total of €80million (£72.2m) which includes initial price plus add-ons.
Despite a lot of buzz surrounding the 21-year-old, many clubs have been forced to drop their interest due to lack of funds. Real Madrid are amongst those who simply cannot justify splurging on such a high price tag. This would have been initially disappointing for Havertz who reportedly ‘imagined himself representing’ the La Liga giants.

Frank Lampard’s summer business is creating a lot of excitement surrounding their upcoming season. Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner will feature for their new club and help drive the Blues to silverware and a battle for the Premier League title. The addition of Havertz will only bolster these chances, especially if he can recreate his 17 goal 2019/20 campaign with Leverkusen (via Transfermarkt).
With just the finer details to be decided and agreed on, it looks as though Havertz will be a Chelsea player once his current club’s Europa League run comes to an end. Leverkusen have reportedly told the playmaker he must remain in Germany to contribute to their remaining competition fixtures (according to SportBild, via 90min).
