Chelsea didn’t mess around in their EFL Cup opener against League Two outfit Grimsby Town last night, thrashing the Mariners 7-1 at Stamford Bridge.
Ross Barkley opened the scoring for the Blues inside four minutes with a well-taken finish following a surging run, before Michy Batshuayi doubled the hosts’ advantage just three minutes later.
The visitors did hit back through Matt Green on the 19th minute, though Chelsea’s class ultimately shone through as they converted a penalty just before half-time to give themselves a two-goal lead heading into the break.
Four goals without return followed for the west Londoners in the second-half, with Batshuayi grabbing his second of the evening four minutes before time.
The Belgian has seen game-time limited at the Bridge this season, with Tammy Abraham preferred up-front in Frank Lampard’s starting XI so far, so will be delighted with his goals and performance last night, albeit against much lesser opposition.
