It was written in the stars wasn’t it? For all the pre-match talk about Petr Cech coming up against the side he spent so many years with, one story-line that seemingly flew under the radar was Olivier Giroud doing the same. Whilst Cech took the headlines beforehand, no doubt it was Chelsea’s French forward that became the story after the Europa League final. After opening the scoring to set the Blues on their way to triumph in Baku, the 32-year-old revealed how proud he was of wearing the Chelsea shirt, and his comments were the ultimate gift for the club’s fans.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the France World Cup winner revealed: “It was an improvement going from Arsenal to Chelsea and I knew I would have the opportunity to win some more trophies. I’m a Blue, a proper Blue. It’s a new chapter of my career and it was very special to score.”
Upon hearing Giroud’s declaration of love for the club, plenty of Chelsea fans took to social media to mock Arsenal for the Frenchman’s success, with many ‘thanking’ the Gunners for letting the striker join them.
Indeed, some Blues supporters urged their rivals to ‘look away’, and compared his path to Stamford Bridge to the journey taken by Ashley Cole.
