Chelsea are on course to sign Paris Saint-Germain star Thiago Silva and he has been tipped to make a mammoth impact on Frank Lampard’s team.
The Blues have already welcomed attackers Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner through the door, with Kai Havertz also close to joining. However, now they have turned their attention to bolstering their defensive options, starting with a move for Silva on a free contract.
The 35-year-old Brazilian is set to sign a two-year deal with Chelsea after his contract with PSG expired following their Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich (via ESPN). It’s likely that this move to West London could be the last of his career.
Will Thiago Silva be a good signing for Chelsea?
Danny Mills believes it’s a piece of incredibly smart business from the Blues who are hoping to challenge for the Premier League title this coming season.
“People always say that you have to buy for the future but sometimes you need to buy for now. That is the most important thing,” Mills said to Football Insider. “It is like when Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] came into Manchester United, that was for now.
“You cannot always buy players for the future and you cannot always just sign potential. You need players in there that are good now who the younger players can learn off.”
Indeed, Lampard’s 2019/20 season saw him successfully integrate the likes of Mason Mount and Reece James into the senior squad full-time. However, with a defensive overhaul potentially on the cards, he could be left with no experienced players across the backline.
Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso have been linked to a move away from the Bridge, alongside Kurt Zouma and Antonio Rudiger who could also be heading out the door. Signing Silva would add another veteran to Lampard’s defensive roster to serve as a role model for the likes of James.
“I think he would be fantastic. A wealth of experience, a quality player and he clearly looks after himself,” Mills continued. “I think he would be a superb addition to Chelsea.”
