Chelsea continue to attract some big names as a new twist in their Declan Rice saga presents itself.
According to Duncan Castles (via Sportslens), the England international is hungry for European football and West Ham is not a club that can provide him with that. He now reportedly wants to leave the Irons and join London rivals Chelsea ahead of next season.
The Blues completed their mission of finishing inside the top four this term and have secured Champions League football. Rice could be a part of this Europe-challenging side if the two teams are able to reach an agreement.
Should Chelsea sign Declan Rice?
Castles has outlined that the 21-year-old will not come cheap, but that doesn’t seem to be an issue for Chelsea. Frank Lampard’s side have already splashed the cash on Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. The West Londoners must now try to bring in some better defensive options to bolster their backline.
Rice can operate in both midfield and as a central defender, which means not only could he help transform Chelsea’s defence, but provide midfield cover when needed.
A report from Football Insider earlier this season saw Noel Whelan tip the Englishman to go above and beyond Harry Maguire’s £80million transfer fee. The pundit claimed Rice could demand as much as £90m for his services, should another club want to prise him away from West Ham.
However, with the Hammers suffering a miserable season, they could be forced into selling for a much cheaper price and both Chelsea and Rice could get their wish, with West Ham pocketing a handsome sum of money.
