Thiago Silva’s move to Stamford Bridge is all but wrapped up as the Brazilian prepares for a medical this week.
Sky Sports have reported that the 35-year-old will undergo his medical assessment on Thursday and will become a Chelsea player should all go well. The veteran will become Frank Lampard’s first senior defensive signing of the summer window.
Will Thiago Silva be a good signing for Chelsea?
Chelsea have already welcomed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner through the door, splashing a combined £78.3million on the duo. Silva will join the West Londoners on a free deal following the expiration of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. Sky Sports claim that the Ligue 1 champions tried to convince the defender to sign a new deal, but he has his sights firmly set on a new chapter in his career.
According to Globo Esporte (via Daily Express), Lampard personally asked the board to pursue Silva and views him as a strong role model figure. The Stamford Bridge icon is reportedly hoping to reassign the captain’s armband to the 35-year-old, who is set to sign a two-year deal with the Blues, taking it away from current skipper Cesar Azpilicueta.
This decision would no doubt not go down too well with the Spaniard, who has been captain of Chelsea for just one season following the departure of Gary Cahill.
Chelsea could be about to undergo a senior overhaul, with four defenders potentially on the chopping block. Antonio Rudiger is another player who could be set for departure after being linked with a move to Liverpool.
Silva will join the ranks of a heavily youthful Lampard side and will bring his leadership abilities and experience to their bid for silverware next season.
