Stamford Bridge, London, Britain - December 16, 2021, Everton's Lewis Dobbin in action with Chelsea's Thiago Silva.

Chelsea are entering the final steps in extending Thiago Silva’s contract, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Silva at Chelsea

Since arriving on a free transfer in the summer of 2020 following a trophy-laden stint at Paris Saint Germain where he won seven Ligue 1 titles and 18 cups in his time in the French capital.

He won the Champions League in his first campaign in West London and at 38 years old is still one of the first names on Graham Potter’s team sheet, starting 17 Premier League games so far this season.

Unsurprisingly the Blues were keen to extend his £96k-per-week wages at the Bridge which expire at the end of the season.

The Latest: Romano update

Speaking on House of Champions, the Italian journalist revealed that talks are progressing well over the Brazilian’s proposed terms with an extension reaching its final stage before completion, saying:

“Thiago Silva contract is a serious possibility, they are speaking, Thiago is super happy with Chelsea, Chelsea are more than happy with Thiago.

“The final step is about Thiago speaking to his family, whether they want to continue in Europe or maybe go back to Brazil.

“But at the moment, the feeling of Chelsea is that they have a very good chance to continue with Silva for one more season.”

The Verdict: Aged like a fine wine

Thiago Silva has yet again proved his worth to Chelsea this year with him a virtually ever-present figure in a changing backline that’s seen injuries to Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Wesley Fofana, with the 38-year-old amazingly staying fit.

The Brazilian is in the top 3% for passes attempted amongst centre-backs over the past year (via FBref), showing his ability to excel in the possession-based football that Graham Potter looks to implore on his side.

With the Blues suffering this season as they currently sit tenth in the Premier League and ten points off top four spot, Silva’s experience and leadership will be key in helping them climb the table.

The 113-time Brazil international captained his country during the World Cup and has donned the armband on numerous occasions this season at the Bridge, with him turning 39 next season, you wouldn’t be surprised to see him still lead the backline again.
