Premier League History

Following discussions between broadcasters, governing bodies, and players, all of the founding members made the decision to break away from the traditional First Division, which dated back to 1888, and make a tidy profit from a lucrative television rights deal in 1992. Thus, the Premier League that we all know and love today was born, with the inaugural campaign kicking off in August of the same year.

Beforehand, English clubs had been banned from European football, as a result of the Heysel Stadium disaster during the 1985 European Cup, and the big five consisting of Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, had long grown tired of the way the Football League distributed TV revenue between all 92 clubs in the system.

Originally, there were 22 clubs in the league, although this has now shrunk to 20 in total.

At the time of writing, Manchester United have won the most titles, with the Red Devils lifting the famous trophy a staggering 13 times. They also claim the records for the biggest points margin and most consecutive title wins.
