Manchester United History

Newton Heath LYR (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) was the original name of Manchester United as they were formed in 1878, one year before the Football League was formed. The club did not see themselves as good enough to compete in the Football League at the time of its formation; therefore, they decided to join in 1892. This did not last long as they were relegated to Division Two after just two seasons in the top flight.

The Red Devils faced many financial issues at the start of the 20th Century, local brewery owner John Henry Davies invested in Newton Heath, and in April/May 1902 Manchester United was born after several alternatives were rejected.

Davies bought the land in which Old Trafford was born in 1910 – one of the most legendary football stadiums in world football. United are still playing there today as it holds 76,000 people – here you can check out the latest news coming from Old Trafford.

Manchester United are in close second behind Liverpool, who have just overtaken The Red Devils as the most successful club in English football. Despite this, United hold the record for the most Premier League titles in England – 13. Sir Alex Ferguson incredibly led the Reds to all of their Premier League titles and his latest was in 2013, which was at the end of his historic managerial career.

Man United also have claimed 12 FA Cups, just one behind Arsenal’s record, five league cups, and most impressively – three Champions League trophies. In May 2008, the Reds defeated Chelsea in a dramatic penalty shootout to seal their third European Cup, in Ryan Giggs 759th appearance.

Wayne Rooney holds the record for all-time top goal-scorer for the club, with 253 goals in 559 games. World superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored an impressive 118 before his move to Real Madrid – read more about Manchester United stars, and check out the latest player gossip.

Currently, Manchester United are facing a challenge to get back to the top of the Premier League. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the process of rebuilding the Reds with top players such as Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, and Anthony Martial, as he aims for the title in coming seasons.
