Chelsea pushing hard in summer pursuit of Romeo Lavia

Southampton's Romeo Lavia reacts after being substituted

Chelsea are ‘stepping up their attempts’ to complete the signing of Southampton youngster Romeo Lavia this summer, according to a fresh transfer update.

The Lowdown: Lavia linked with Chelsea move

The Blues’ midfield has become an ageing area of the pitch this season, with Jorginho moved on to Arsenal and doubts surrounding the futures of both N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic.

While the pair continue to be important players, when fit, the need for youth in the middle of the park is clear, which is why Enzo Fernandez joined during the January transfer window.

More young midfielders will be needed at the end of the season, however, and Lavia is one player who has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in recent times.

The 19-year-old may be part of a struggling Southampton team currently but he has arguably been one of their standout performers this season, starting 15 Premier League matches and enjoying at 86.5% pass completion rate.

Now, a new claim has emerged that further suggests Lavia could end up being a Chelsea player next season.

The Latest: Blues making their move

According to talkSPORT‘s Alex Crook, Chelsea are still interested in acquiring the teenager’s services this summer, and they’re actually ‘stepping up their attempts’ to sign him.

It is stated that the Blues had a bid for Lavia rejected by Manchester City before he joined Saints instead last year, but they are now ready to go back in for him.

The Verdict: Top young player

Lavia could be exactly what Chelsea are looking for in the middle of the park this summer, with the one-cap Belgium Under-21 international someone with a big future ahead of him.

Last year, Kevin De Bruyne backed his compatriot to become a ‘top player’ over time and he is already shining at the highest level, making 18 appearances in the Premier League to date.

Southampton being relegated would surely only increase Chelsea’s chances of signing Lavia, with the south coast surely forced to sell him, and he is someone who should be viewed as a long-term replacement for Kante.

The Belgian has averaged 1.9 tackles per game in the league this season, highlighting his tenacity, but he has also averaged 0.7 dribbles, showing that he can take risks on the ball in tight areas from time to time.

Chelsea must do all they can to get Lavia at the end of the season, making him part of the rebuild and allowing the midfield transition to be as seamless as possible.
