Over the summer, Chelsea had a decision to make, and it’s quickly becoming clear that they made the wrong one. Tammy Abraham moved to Aston Villa over the summer, towards the end of the window, after Chelsea clearly decided that he was surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
This decision came after a poor campaign from Alvaro Morata and a pretty average start to life across London from Olivier Giroud. It also came amidst a lack of movement from Chelsea in pursuit of a new striker.
Now, though, Abraham is quickly proving them wrong. On a weekend in which Chelsea were trounced by Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa’s rise continued under Dean Smith with a win over Birmingham. The game finished 4-2, and it rounds off a few great games for the Villains. Abraham was, yet again, involved for the club – and he showed exactly what Chelsea are missing.
Chelsea are in a really tough position – and it’s all they’re own doing.
Undeniably, one of Chelsea’s worst performers against Spurs was Alvaro Morata. He was caught offside frequently, he was lacking potency and, more important than anything else, he just looked poor. He wasn’t a threat, and that was Chelsea’s number one issue.
Contrast that with Tammy Abraham, then. The forward, despite being just 21-years-old, has had a regular role in the Villa side this season, and he’s looked good. Following the arrival of Dean Smith, in particular, he’s looked particularly great – and he’s had a significant hand in his team’s success over the last 3 games. He’s picked up an assist and 2 goals in his last 3 games, and that only tells half the story.
A willing runner and a good aerial threat, offering good pace and energy whilst also, naturally, offering brilliant potency going forward, Abraham is the sort of player that any team would love to have – and that includes Chelsea.
Alvaro Morata has had a couple of good games recently, but Abraham always delivers when he gets a chance. It didn’t work out for him last season, but that wasn’t through a lack trying. This season, he’s proving yet again that he’s able to do a job wherever he goes, and whilst Chelsea are lacking a forward at present, Aston Villa are growing every single week thanks to a player that could well have stayed at Stamford Bridge.
Now, Chelsea are in a really tough position – and it’s all they’re own doing.
