Claude Puel’s misery continued as he saw his side fall to a disappointing 1-0 loss to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United on Sunday. While United’s victory indicated the beginning of something great for the Red Devils, the Foxes’ loss adversely displayed the beginning of the end of Puel’s reign as manager.
The French manager’s been heavily criticized fans for his negative tactics, often making his side play too defensive for their own good. Puel’s team-selection has been questionable in recent weeks, as many questioned why midfielder Hamza Choudhary didn’t feature against United.
He’s seemingly lost the trust of his players, who are just as frustrated playing under him as he is managing them.
The Foxes are winless in five, having last won on New Year’s day. The humiliating loss to League One side Newport Country signalled a new low for the former Premier League champions. Puel’s side has been shambolic defensively, often digging their own hole with defensive errors. Even the menacing duo of Jaime Vardy and James Maddison have turned inefficient now.
The Frenchman’s last chance of redemption will be on Sunday when his side visits Wembley Stadium to take on Tottenham Hotspur. If he gets the players behind him and motivated, an unlikely victory could spark a turnaround. However, another crushing loss could trigger the end of Puel’s uneventful reign, which has led the Foxes back to mediocrity.
