Premier League club preparing surprise bid for Jamie Vardy after striker announces he’s leaving Leicester City

Jamie Vardy brought tears to the eyes of Leicester City fans last week when he announced he would leave the club at the end of the season, drawing a close to his legendary 14-year spell at the King Power Stadium.

Famously signed from non-league Fleetwood Town for just £1 million in 2012, Vardy has since gone on to score just shy of 200 goals for the Foxes—a milestone he’ll be eager to reach in the coming weeks. His crowning achievement came in the 2015/16 season, when he fired Leicester to an improbable Premier League title, just a year after they narrowly avoided relegation.

Vardy also helped Leicester lift the FA Cup in 2020/21 and the Community Shield later that year. Individually, he claimed the Premier League Golden Boot in 2019/20, scoring 23 goals—finishing ahead of Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Southampton’s Danny Ings.

In an emotional farewell video shared on social media, Vardy described Leicester as his “second home” and “extended family” but admitted, “the time has come to say goodbye.”

“This isn’t retirement,” he explained. “I want to keep playing and doing what I enjoy most: scoring goals. I might be 38, but I still have the desire and ambition to achieve so much more.”

Following news of his departure, many assumed Vardy would either drop down a division or head abroad for the final chapter of his career—Wrexham AFC and several Major League Soccer clubs were reportedly interested.

However, it’s now claimed that Vardy is keen to remain in the Premier League, and according to Football Insider, Wolverhampton Wanderers are preparing a surprise move for the veteran striker.

The report suggests Wolves are “keen to add [Vardy’s] experience and goals” to their squad this summer, especially with star forward Matheus Cunha already in talks over a potential switch to Manchester United.

Vardy wouldn’t be a direct replacement for Cunha but is instead viewed by manager Vitor Pereira as an impact player—someone who can come off the bench and deliver crucial goals.

Whether Vardy would accept such a role remains to be seen. But given his desire to continue competing at the highest level—and his 143 Premier League goals—he may feel a different destination could better align with his ambitions.
