The Liverpool supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern would have been ecstatic following the news that playmaker Philippe Coutinho had signed a new five-year deal with the club on Wednesday, and they will now be wondering if there will be any more transfer business before the January window closes next Tuesday.

The Reds fans standing at the bar may feel that their squad needs freshening up with the Jurgen Klopp’s side yet to win in the Premier League in 2017 – Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat by strugglers Swansea City was a real low point in what has generally been a positive campaign for the Merseyside outfit as they currently sit fourth in the standings.

And their loss to Southampton in the semi-final of the EFL Cup was the cherry on top of the icing, in what has been a dreadful month for the Reds.

The loss of in-form Senegalese forward Sadio Mane to the African Cup of Nations at the start of the year – as well as Coutinho’s recent absence because of injury – could see Liverpool delve into the market before the end of the month – the landlord is certainly hoping to see at least one new face brought in to Anfield.

The Merseyside outfit have looked a little toothless without the quality and unpredictability that Sadio Mane brings to the team since he departed for the African Cup of Nations following their draw against Sunderland at the start of the month, but Bailey – who has scored eight goals and provided 10 assists for the Belgian outfit this term – has certainly shown that he has the ability to make an impact for Jurgen Klopp’s men now.

William Carvalho

According to reports in Portugal, Liverpool are said to be holding talks with Sporting Lisbon with a view to bringing Euro 2016 winner William Carvalho to the Premier League – in a deal that could be worth more than €30m – before the transfer window slams shut on Tuesday – this is certainly a rumour to whet the appetite of the fans that frequent the tavern.

The impressive 24-year-old defensive midfielder would add some steel and strength to the centre of the park for the Reds, providing some much-needed competition for the likes of captain Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and Lucas Leiva – the landlord believes it is much needed after some disappointing showings in 2017, including when they were without Henderson in the 2-2 draw at Sunderland.
