Coventry City History

Coventry are a club known for their ups and downs as a football club, the Sky Blues were founded in 1883 by Willie Stanley, an employee of cycle firm, Singers. As a result, the club was known as Singers FC for over 15 years until their name was changed to Coventry City in 1898. Early matches were played at Dowells Field, until a move to Stoke Road in 1887, where their golden era began winning the Birmingham Junior Cup in consecutive years from 1891.

They later moved to Highfield Road site in 1899, this was their home of football until their move to Ricoh Arena as we know it today, in 2005. Get the latest Coventry City news from Ricoh Arena here, and do not miss out on breaking transfer stories!

One of the most historic moments for the Sky Blues was in the 1986-87 season when they overcame Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 after extra time to claim their one and only FA Cup title in their history. A team without stars went on to win at Wembley with their outstanding teamwork, and they put on one of the finest post-war FA Cup Finals.

Coventry were among the first 20 teams in the Premier League as we know it today, they finished 15th in the inaugural season, and maintained a similar position for nine seasons before being relegated back down to the Championship in 2001.

During their time in the Premier League, they shared many memories, one, in particular, was their amazing unbeaten run of thirteen games which was inspired by legends Dion Dublin and Darren Huckerby who led City to the Fa Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1987. In 1999 the Sky Blues pulled off a club-record singing – Robbie Kean for £6 million.

Coventry City battled hard to regain their Premier League status for 11 seasons; however, it just was not meant to be. In 2012, they were sadly relegated back down to League One for the first time since 1967. It got even worse for the Sky Blue with further relegation in 2016-17 where they were relegated again to League Two; fortunately, this did not last long with them fighting their way back up to League One the following season after winning promotion through the play-offs.

This season is currently their second season back in League One, and they look to be on their way back up to the Championship where they belong if they can carry on their winning form and solid defence. At the moment Coventry City are in first place in League One, but anything can change – stay up to date with the latest Coventry City news, as we bring you breaking stories from the Ricoh Arena right here!
