Crystal Palace: Fifield makes Benteke claim

The Athletic’s Crystal Palace correspondent Dominic Fifield has taken to Twitter to issue a three-word claim on the possibility of Eagles striker Christian Benteke being handed a new deal at Selhurst Park.

This comes after Fifield posted another tweet in which he relayed an update from Eagles manager Roy Hodgson on the possibility of Benteke being sold this month, with the Palace boss declaring that: “Christian is still part of our team here, so I’m not convinced the club are going to be interested in letting him go.”

Will Benteke get a new deal at Crystal Palace?

After Fifield shared Hodgson’s comments on Benteke’s potential departure via Twitter, one particular fan of the south London club responded to his tweet to ask the journalist if there’s much chance of the 30-year-old Belgian getting a new deal at Palace, with his current contract set to expire in the summer.

The Athletic reporter replied to that fan and stated: ‘Surely no chance,’ going on to explain that it ‘will depend upon what the market looks like in the summer’ and claiming a parting of ways is the ‘likeliest scenario’.

‘Surely no chance’

Benteke hasn’t played incredibly well for Palace in recent seasons. Since the 2016/17 campaign – his first at Selhurst Park – in which he scored 15 league goals, Benteke has failed to net on more than three occasions in any Premier League season.

He has already hit the back of the net three times this term, and so, could be on track to enjoy his best campaign since 2016/17, but given that he has not exactly produced mind-blowing results in recent seasons and he is currently the Eagles’ third-highest earner on £120k-per-week, it may be understandable if the club doesn’t want to renew his contract on those terms and a departure is likely, as indicated by Fifield.

In other news, some Palace fans have been reacting to a post relaying information on the cost of Connor Wickham’s time at Selhurst Park.
