Crystal Palace are monitoring Allan Saint-Maximin after he was dropped on the weekend in Newcastle’s fixture against Burnley, according to the Daily Mail.
The Eagles actually reportedly (as per the Daily Mail) tried to sign the 22-year-old French winger in the summer but were beaten to the signing by the Magpies. Indeed, he was seen as an ideal replacement for Wilfried Zaha when the Ivory Coast international handed in a transfer request, but now there is the possibility that both could play together with Zaha failing to get his move.
The Daily Mail says that Wolves and Palace are monitoring the winger after Steve Bruce was reportedly concerned with the Frenchman in training and decided there were 11 better and more reliable players for the game on the weekend.
Zaha is the main attacking threat at Selhurst Park and, if opposition teams are able to contain him by frustrating him or man-marking him, then Palace generally struggle to create chances, as the fact that they went two years without winning when he wasn’t in the team would suggest.
So, if Saint-Maxmin is not a player that Steve Bruce feels like should start at Newcastle, then Crystal Palace should try their best to sign the French winger. Given his 4.3 dribbles on average per game (via WhoScored) he looks like he’d be a perfect suit for their counter-attacking style, either operating alongside Zaha (4.6 dribbles per game) or as a replacement.
