Crystal Palace: Conor Gallagher set to stay at Chelsea
Crystal Palace target Conor Gallagher looks set to stay at Chelsea beyond the January window, according to Michael Bridge.
The Lowdown: Gallagher speculation
The Eagles have continued to be linked with a move for the 22-year-old in recent days, with Gallagher thought to be keen on reuniting with Patrick Vieira at Selhurst Park.
He has been described as ‘one of the most sought-after players heading into the final hours of the transfer window’, with the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle United and West Ham also thought to be interested in his services.
The Latest: Bridge’s comments
Sky Sports reporter Bridge was talking to GiveMeSport on deadline day regarding Gallagher. He said that he heard it would be one of Jorginho or Gallagher leaving Stamford Bridge today, and with news emerging in the last few hours that Jorginho is on the way to Arsenal, an exit for Gallagher looks unlikely, with Newcastle also named by Bridge.
“From the little bits I heard this morning, it was either going to be Conor Gallagher going out or Jorginho. He’s highly regarded by a number of clubs but if Jorginho ends up going to Arsenal which looks to be the case, then Chelsea will have a decision to make.
“Despite Newcastle’s interest, I think they’d be reluctant to let him go to what they consider to be a Premier League rival now. I wouldn’t completely rule out a late loan deal, but a lot will rest on Graham Potter’s decision.”
The Verdict: Blow for Vieira
Gallagher, labelled as a ‘monster’ by journalist and Palace fan Tom Dutton, was seemingly keen to work with Vieira once again, so this could come as a blow to the Palace boss late in the window.
Matt Woosnam believes that Palace’s midfield is a problem contributing towards the lack of goals this season, so signing Gallagher, who won the club’s Player of the Season award last season after contributing to 13 goals in 39 appearances, would have been a wise move.
It doesn’t look as if that will be the case, though, so it will be interesting to see if Palace look at another midfielder alongside a move for Naouirou Ahamada.
