Many Crystal Palace fans cannot contain their excitement following the club announcing the signing of Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The South London side tweeted: ‘Welcome to the Palace, Jean-Philippe Mateta’ and many fans flooded to this tweet, with one calling it ‘excellent news’. Journalist Dominic Fifield revealed further details of the transfer as he reported that it is initially an 18 month loan but there is an obligation to make the deal permanent if certain criteria are met.
The £13.5m-valued striker has featured for the France U21 side in the past (Transfermarkt), scoring three goals in nine appearances. He is only 23 years-old so reduces the average age of Palace’s ageing squad massively.
Mateta has been in great form this season for Mainz (WhoScored). He has played 17 times in all competitions and picked up ten goals and one assist, with seven of these goals coming in the Bundesliga.
The signing looks very promising and if Roy Hodgson can get the best out of him, the club could push for a top half finish this season.
Here is how Palace fans reacted to the news:
“Excellent news. Right, now let’s get Wilf wide again so he and Eze can give the front two something to feed on.”
“Wanted him at our club for a while now and I’m glad he’s finally here! Welcome to Crystal Palace Jean-Philippe Mateta!!!”
“Very excited by this tbf. Wilf Eze Batsman and him could cause some serious damage to defences if they all click”
“Brilliant news. Welcome Mateta look forward to seeing you in”
