Dalglish Desperate To Beat Sir Alex To £10M Defender

Kenny Dalglish is reportedly interested in bringing Birmingham City defender Scott Dann to Liverpool in a £10million transfer this summer, as the Scot looks to rebuild his Liverpool squad.

It is widely understood that Liverpool, under the ownership of NESV and the keen eye of Damien Commoli, are interested in improving their until-recently under-achieving squad by bringing in and establishing young talent who, it is hoped, will serve the club for years to come.

Scott Dann has impressed for Carling Cup winners Birmingham City since signing for the Blues in 2009; he helped the club finish in a very creditable 9th place in 2009-10 and was a key player in their League Cup run this term, before his injury in January put him out for the rest of the season.

The imposing centre-back started his career with Walsall, before moving to Coventry City and then on to Birmingham for £4million. Now Kenny Dalglish is considering offering the Liverpudlian Dann a transfer to his boyhood club, in what would be a dream move for the former Anfield season-ticket holder.

Alex McLeish will be desperate to hang on to the English defender, who at 24 is still at an early stage if his career, and understandably, Birmingham City will require suitable recompense for one of their best players – namely a fee of £10million.

But Dalglish is looking for a long-term replacement for Jamie Carragher, and the Anfield legend is likely to be backed with substantial transfer funds in the summer, so the likely fee will not put the Liverpool management team off.

However, Alex Ferguson has also been keeping tabs on the defender, who has formed a formidable partnership with Roger Johnson at St. Andrews. The Manchester United manager has been impressed with the form of youngster Chris Smalling, and with Rio Ferdinand playing an increasingly diminshed role, it’s thought the signing of Dann would provide Fergie with another up-and-coming defender to improve competition for places and learn from Vidic and Ferdinand.

It seems that the transfer of Dann to a bigger club may well happen this summer. Should Kenny Dalglish sign a long-term contract at Liverpool, the man who last brought the league title to Anfield will be able to appeal to Dann’s roots and history of support for the Reds to beat Alex Ferguson to the coveted defender’s signature.
