Rangers are back in the big-time in Scottish football but after the sudden departure of Mark Warburton, their fans here in the Transfer Tavern really don’t know where things are heading in the future.

Once renowned as a powerhouse of world football, the club is currently somewhat in a state of disarray, manager-less and needing someone to help re-affirm their place as one of the biggest clubs in Scotland.

They’re someway off Celtic in the race for the title and with European football still at least another six months away, they’re going to need to continue putting wins together and ensure they finish as high up the table as possible.

But alongside some of our more passionate Gers fans here in the Tavern, we’re feeling reflective and we want to share some facts about the club with people that might not be so aware of Rangers’ past.

So with that in mind, here’s two things you probably never knew about Rangers…

They’re the only club to have ever had a 100% win record in a season

Many of us have heard of the Arsenal invincibles and the Real Madrid Galacticos, but did you know, Rangers are the only club in world football to have gone through a league season with a 100% record?

This was achieved in the 1898/99 season where they played 18 and won 18. Dominance indeed and often an achievement that is forgotten about because of more modern-day successes.

The season is known as “the record”.

They’ve got some seriously long-standing stars

Clubs like Rangers are renowned for rearing stars and bringing them through the ranks and into the first-team and Dougie Gray is certainly no exception.

The former favourite is by far the club’s longest serving player and between 1925 and 1947, he made a staggering 940 appearances for the Gers. But despite being the club’s most-capped player, he once played against Rangers and was on the winning side in a Stirling Charity Cup match.
