The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern were shocked by reports from Sky Sports yesterday which claimed Raheem Sterling is some distance from signing a contract extension with the club.
Raheem Sterling has divided the British media in recent years and taken plenty of criticism for his antics both on and off the field, but following the tattoo debacle which recently dominated the press it seems that the English nation have rallied together in support of the 23-year-old star. England’s pre-tournament buzz has been characterised by negativity in recent years, but the Sterling saga has proven that fans and journalists are fed up of the status quo and are eager to rally round in support of a new-look team.
However, with the World Cup just two days from kicking-off, Sky Sports’ report on Sterling’s contract situation at Man City proved that the agenda against him will continue to persist, however, the supporters should have no fear about the future of one of their stars of the season. In response to Sterling’s contract situation, one of our regular punters reported that a handful of City supporters on Twitter were quick to express their concern and call for the club to sell Sterling this summer whilst his transfer value remains so high.
Although they have every right to be concerned by reports, they should disregard them as nothing more than a last-ditch attempt to unsettle the English star before he steps onto the international stage in Russia. With the season wrapped up and Sterling now focussed on one of the biggest tournaments of his career, it’s no wonder that ‘no fresh negotiations are planned’ between himself and Manchester City.
Sterling left Liverpool for City in 2015 in search of silverware and naturally for an increase in salary. Since his arrival Sterling has won 3 trophies and improved dramatically under a manager who has placed huge faith in his ability and enabled him to grow into one of the most devastating wingers in world football, so why on earth would he have any desire to depart the club?
Considering City have both enormous riches and realistic ambitions of winning the Champions League, Sterling has absolutely no reason to depart the club anytime soon, so the supporters can rest easy in the knowledge that they will not suffer the same fate as Liverpool this summer, as the latest reports merely represent another media ploy to depict Sterling as a greedy pantomime villain for the English public to criticise.
