Chelsea: Edouard Mendy currently ‘not looking’ to sign contract extension

Etihad Stadium, Manchester, Britain - November 9, 2022. Chelsea's Edouard Mendy looks dejected after the match.

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is currently ‘not looking’ to sign a contract extension at Stamford Bridge, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The Lowdown: Uncertain future

The Senegal international’s deal under Graham Potter isn’t set to expire until 2025 but his future has become uncertain after it was claimed by an inside source that he doesn’t feel respected enough.

The Blues shot-stopper could therefore reportedly push to leave in the summer should he not be able to regain his number one spot from Kepa Arrizabalaga upon his return from injury.

Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are said to have been offered the chance to sign the 31-year-old late last year, so it sounds like he could be on his way out ahead of the 2023/24 term.

The Latest: Phillips’ comments

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Phillips delivered a significant update on Mendy’s future by suggesting that he doesn’t see him committing himself to fresh terms at Chelsea:

“Mendy is another one that doesn’t look good at the moment.

“He’s not looking to sign a new contract extension with Chelsea as of now, there’s been no talks of late. Chelsea have also been pondering replacements for him so he could go.”

The Verdict: Alongside Mount?

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has rejected a new contract offer to extend his stay in SW6 and Mendy looks to be following in his footsteps, but the club should do everything they can to keep him.

The 6 foot 3 colossus has recorded a remarkable 49 clean sheets in 104 appearances since arriving in the capital, where he was averaging 4.7 successful long balls per top-flight game prior to his absence.

The France-born talent has also helped the Blues secure three trophies – Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Supercup – showing how effective he can be between the sticks.

Mendy already appears to be considering his options elsewhere and Chelsea seem to be identifying successors, so it will be difficult for both parties to reach an agreement, but it’s more than worth a go considering what he can bring to the table.
