Celtic: Southampton will give Mohamed Elyounoussi a chance next season

Mohamed Elyounoussi

Mohamed Elyounoussi returned to Celtic on another loan this summer, indicating that he is highly-rated by the Scottish champions.

However, the possibility of buying him in the future might not be as easy as they may have liked following the latest update on his future.

What next for Elyounoussi and Celtic?

According to The Athletic, Southampton are prepared to give him another chance in England next year. The Hoops forced Saints into a quick decision which meant he was back at Celtic Park for another season.

Celtic are said to have demanded an answer on his availability for this season in June. The Athletic claimed that Southampton are expecting Elyounoussi to prove they were right to spend £16m on him two years ago.

They believe that he will justify that fee and can excel as a Premier League player, and Ralph Hassenhuttl is willing to give him a chance to prove as such in 2021.

How much would Elyounoussi’s departure harm Celtic?

The Norway winger has played 32 times for the Hoops and scored 11 goals whilst also picking up nine assists, per Transfermarkt. This is a decent record and you can see why Celtic would like to sign him on a permanent deal.

As it is, Neil Lennon should have a lot of time to plan for a future replacement if he cannot secure Elyounoussi permanently, although he can enjoy the Norwegian’s talents for another few months at least.

Despite impressing at Parkhead, there is no guarantee that the winger will work his way back into Southampton’s plans; and if that proves to be the case, Celtic may be at the head of the queue to secure his permanent signing next year.

It would therefore be a blow for Lennon if he is unable to bring in the Norwegian on a permanent deal in the summer. It could leave a sizeable gap in their squad and it would be difficult for the club to replace him with someone who is at the same level as the 25-year-old.
