Exclusive: Roberts drops major Alli verdict amid first-team struggles

Tottenham Hotspur legend Graham Roberts insists that Dele Alli has to be played in his best position, which is behind the striker, as the club’s season continues.

Spurs have endured a topsy-turvy start to the season and have endured two difficult defeats in their last two Premier League outings.

Spurs lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and were then beaten 3-0 by Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Still, the club did manage to progress into the fourth round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday, despite throwing away a 2-0 lead against Wolves to draw 2-2 in 90 minutes; Spurs won the tie on penalties and will play Burnley in the next round.

Alli was played in that game as a central midfielder, although he did provide an assist, and he has often been deployed on the left hand side of a midfield three, being asked to track back and contribute defensively instead of focusing on his attacking.

And Roberts believes that Alli really needs to be pushed forward on the pitch.

He said: “Dele Alli is not a left winger. You play him in his best position, which is behind the front person.”
