Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are thinking it may be time for the ‘Special One’ to leave Old Trafford, after growing tired of his old style approach to games and his shifting of the blame in his post-match interviews.

Indeed, the Red Devils have vastly improved under Jose Mourinho in the two seasons he’s been in charge. However, recently our fans in the bar have been questioning if they’ve seen the best of what Mourinho has to offer.

The Premier League and football in general moves on every four to five years, that’s for sure. Fergie was fantastic at moving with the times and keeping himself and the team on the sharp end of the turning point. In his second full season at the club, United seem to have not moved forward in terms of playing style and many believe that Mourinho usually peaks in this season before the infamous fallout of the third season happens.

The United faithful are desperate to get back to the DNA of the club’s attacking style of football, and Mourinho’s decisions to be reactive more than proactive seems to be wearing thin with the Old Trafford faithful.

With that in mind, our landlord takes a look at TWO reasons why the Red Devils have seen the best of Mourinho already…

The Pep v Jose Argument

In two years at rivals Man City, Pep Guardiola has revolutionised the way City play their football after a tough learning curve of a first season in English football for the Spaniard. City have blown away all before them in the League so far this year and have been worthy champions to boot.

In two years at Old Trafford, Jose, with credit, masterminded a double within his first season of the League Cup and Europa League.

Many expected the Red Devils to push on, however, after a bright start it’s all started to crumble and they have been way of the pace – if it wasn’t for Liverpool and Spurs’ poor first halves and Chelsea’s second half of the season slumps, things may well be looking a lot bleaker for the Portuguese coach.

Nothing left to offer

After a great debut season, maybe not so much in the Premier League, but winning the two cup competitions, we all thought that the Red Devils were a shoe-in for the title chase. As the seasons progressed United seem to have struggled more and more, albeit picking up the points they’ve needed to keep in the ‘best of the rest’ position but hardly setting any fireworks off with their performances.

We all at the bar feel that Mourinho – bar spending silly amounts of money in the summer – can level up next season and take United back to the glory years of the now distant memory of the Fergie years, unless he brings his tactics and beliefs up to date.
