With Rooney yet to return and make good on his commitment to the club, and Berbatov reaching the unfortunate milestone of 10 hours of football since his last Premiership goal, United’s strike force will hardly have defenders quaking in their boots.
Macheda may have grabbed another impressive goal against Villa at the weekend, but he has yet to establish himself as a first-team regular, and Hernandez cannot be expected to be the only source of guile and attacking intent for United every time.
The quartet could have the potential to become United’s most fearsome strike force since the glory days of Cole, Yorke, Sheringham and Solskjaer, but until the first-choice pair find their form, and while the second-string continue to develop, Fergie may look for an established talent to provide some cover and an extra attacking edge.
Argentina’s Mauro Boselli could be the man to ease Sir Alex’s concerns. While playing for Estudiantes, Boselli was a veritable goal machine, yet since signing for Wigan over the summer, the striker has managed only 1 goal in 10 starts and 1 substitute appearance. Roberto Martinez already has Hugo Rodallega, Franco Di Santo and Victor Moses at his disposal, and so may well be tempted by any offer from United in January.
Wigan would surely look to recoup the £6m only recently laid out for the 25 year-old, yet for United this would probably seem a fair price for a stop-gap striking solution, and Ferguson could be confident of signing a proven goal scorer for relatively little money, and would hope to inspire in Boselli the kind of form which saw him net 32 goals in 56 appearances for Argentine outfit Estudiantes before moving to the DW Stadium.
