Tottenham Hotspur may regret their decision to pass up the chance to re-sign midfielder Christian Eriksen this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Spurs rumours

After returning to football with a six-month move to Brentford last season, the Denmark international demonstrated he was still capable of performing at the top level.

As a result, numerous teams emerged with interest in signing the 30-year-old on a free transfer this summer.

Having strongly been linked with a return to Hotspur Way, Spurs ultimately passed up on the chance to re-sign the midfielder, consequently allowing him to join Manchester United on a three-year deal.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s claim

O’Rourke believes Tottenham may regret passing up the opportunity to re-sign Eriksen this summer, especially given Antonio Conte’s desire to bring in another midfielder.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the journalist claimed:

“I’m sure there’s maybe a tinge of regret, especially when seeing how well Christian Eriksen has done at Manchester United, he’s been a real good signing and has brought a bit of authority and creativity to the midfield and he was on a free transfer, so it looks a great piece of business.”

The Verdict: Big loss

When looking at Eriksen’s underlying stats, it is clear to see what the Lilywhites are missing in his absence.

As per FBRef, compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, the 30-year-old ranks in the top one percent for assists and expected assists, and also in the top two percent for non-penalty expected goals plus expected assists and for shot-creating actions.

Consequently, he has earned statistical comparisons to Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, formerly of Tottenham of course, illustrating his undeniable impact in the Red Devils’ midfield.

Having been hailed as a ‘technically gifted’ playmaker by France manager Didier Deschamps, it is easy to argue Tottenham made a mistake by opting against re-signing the Dane this summer.
