Forget Ramires: Chelsea need to land 1 of these 2 young midfielders to avoid further misery

Our Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern will be weighing up if it’s worth a reunion with their former Champions League hero in the summer.

Brazilian Ramires is courting a move back to Stamford Bridge after falling down the pecking order at Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning, the club he left for two years ago after falling out of favour with then boss Guus Hiddink. Now at the age of 30, the midfielder is looking to return to the club he holds dear in his heart again before hanging his boots up.

A popular figure during his initial stay at Stamford Bridge, he won every major trophy with the Blues and helped spark THAT comeback against Barcelona back in 2012.

However, our regulars believe a move for the player would be deemed pointless and should opt for younger and upcoming talent to drive the club forward. With that in mind, our landlord takes a look at TWO younger Ramires-type midfielders that the Chelsea board should be looking at, to bring some much-needed oomph and bite into the centre of the park…

Fabian Ruiz

The 21-year-old Spaniard is still making a name for himself in La Liga with Real Betis, impressing in a league packed to the rafters with technical youngsters. Ruiz is predominately an attacking midfielder by trade and, this season, he has five assists and two goals in his 24 games in this position.

While he can still work on his finishing, his dribbling and passing game is strong. Furthermore, as he’s only 21, there is plenty of time to improve his all-round game. Indeed, Chelsea could pick themselves up a real player with a lot of potential here by dipping into the Spanish market.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

The Lazio man is having a great season in Serie A so far, that much is for sure. He’s got a keen eye for goal with his 11 goals in 35 appearances so far. Indeed, the 23-year-old can still improve his game however, he’s rightly being recognised quickly as a modern-day box-to-box midfielder.

He excels at his defensive contributions as much as dribbling the ball forward and these characteristics are hard to come by nowadays in such a young man.
