At present, Chelsea have just two forwards to choose from, with Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata both fighting for a starting berth. So far, neither player has done much to suggest that they’re the perfect player for the club, with mixed fortunes plaguing their season so far.
It could have been so different for the club, though. They let one of their most talented young forwards leave the club on loan, with Tammy Abraham overlooked for a first-team role in favour of a move down to Aston Villa.
Now, that’s quickly looking like a bad decision. He’s had a good season so far at Villa, having bagged 6 goals, and all the while, the Blues continue to lack potency.
It begs the question, then, what does Abraham really have to do in order to get a chance at Stamford Bridge?
We recently asked Chelsea supporters whether they see a future for Abraham at their club, and it’s fair to say that the Chelsea faithful are divided.
In response, 57% of those polled believe that he does have a future at Chelsea, whilst 43% are clearly feeling less optimistic.
It’s likely that Abraham’s poor season last year has had an impact on supporters, with the Englishman failing to adjust to the Premier League. However, he’s proven yet again that he’s more than capable of performing in the Championship – so there is clearly talent there.
In truth, it’s likely that the season ahead could determine his fate. If he struggles, it could be all over for him at Stamford Bridge. However, if he enjoys another impressive season, as he did at Bristol City, anything could happen. It will be interesting to see if the Chelsea supporters’ perspective changes over the course of the season.
