Chelsea: Frank Sinclair believes transfer target Ben Chilwell is ‘very overpriced’

Chelsea continue their hot pursuit of transfer target Ben Chilwell from Premier League rivals Leicester.

The Blues have acknowledged their need to improve their defensive ranks ahead of the upcoming season. Alongside a new goalkeeper, Frank Lampard wants to bolster his back-line and has targeted the Foxes ace as his top priority.

Brendan Rodgers doesn’t want to part with the 23-year-old and has stated that Leicester are looking for more than the £80m that they banked for the sale of Harry Maguire (via The Mirror). However, Frank Sinclair believes that this is far too high of a price for the England international.

“Ben Chilwell is still a tough nut to crack,” the former Chelsea and Leicester man told Genting Bet, via Goal.com. “When you hear the way that Brendan Rodgers talks about Ben Chilwell, so strongly and how much [he is] a part of Leicester City going forward, I guess it would be a difficult one and he’s always going to be a very, very overpriced signing.”

Sinclair added: “For me, there’s a lot of world-class full-backs out there and Frank has to get the right one for Chelsea Football Club. Obviously Ben Chilwell is a top player and England international, but I don’t think Chelsea should pay over the odds for him.”

Chlesea left-back Marcos Alonso could be headed for the exit this summer after The Times reported that the Blues had named four defenders among a list of players to be put on the market. If the Spaniard is sold, Lampard must ensure that he has recruited a solid replacement before the 2020/21 season starts.

After finishing fourth in the Premier League this year, Chelsea will want to up their game and push for silverware. Their attacking options certainly look strong but they need to plug their leaky defence – they scored 69 league goals last term but conceded 54.
