Glasgow Rangers: Fans loved Bayer Leverkusen director’s comments about Ibrox

A number of Glasgow Rangers fans were lapping up comments from Bayer Leverkusen director Simon Rolfes about Ibrox.

As per Daily Record, the former Germany international visited the Light Blues’ home ground when the Bundesliga side won 3-1 there in the first leg of the teams’ Europa League round of 16 clash back in March. His comments were then shared on Leverkusen’s official English language Twitter channel @bayer04_en.

He said: “It was a fantastic atmosphere, no question. The Rangers crowd were world class. It was one of the most unique and thrilling atmospheres you can think of. But it was also very weird, playing the last game in Europe in front of such a big crowd before the shutdown of sports throughout the world.”

Rolfes speaks as a man who has won 26 caps for Germany and played in the Euro 2008 semi-finals, as well as experiencing Champions League nights as a Leverkusen player at venues such as Benfica’s Estadio da Luz and Ateltico Madrid’s former Vicente Calderon home. Therefore, for him to speak so highly of the Ibrox atmosphere is noteworthy.

The ‘Gers face the Bundesliga side in the second leg next Thursday with an uphill task to continue a European campaign which began more than a year ago with a 4-0 win away to St Joseph’s in Gibraltar way back in the first qualifying round.
