Rangers on the verge of completing signing of “top” international midfielder who plays alongside Erling Haaland

Rangers’ summer rebuild under new manager Russell Martin is well underway, as the club looks to bounce back from a disappointing 2024/25 campaign.

The Ibrox side have already added Max Aarons (on loan from Bournemouth), Joe Rothwell, and Emmanuel Fernandez to the squad—three players expected to bring real quality and depth across key positions.

Aarons’ arrival is especially eye-catching. Once a target for Barcelona, the former England U21 right-back brings technical quality and top-flight experience.

Martin, who played alongside Aarons at Norwich City, spoke highly of the 24-year-old’s potential.

“Max is a player who I have always kept a keen eye on since he was emerging through the youth ranks while I was coming to the end of my time at Norwich as a player,” Martin said. “He is a wonderfully talented player who is hungry to develop, improve and help deliver success for his side.”

Now, Rangers are set to make their fourth signing of the window—and it’s another exciting name.

According to the Daily Record, Rangers are on the verge of completing a deal for Luton Town midfielder Thelo Aasgaard.

The Norway international is expected in Glasgow within 48 hours to finalise terms on a long-term deal. Talks between the clubs are ongoing, with the structure of the deal—reportedly involving a significant fee and performance-based add-ons—being ironed out.

Martin hopes to have Aasgaard in the squad before Rangers’ friendly against Club Brugge on Sunday.

Aasgaard joined Luton from Wigan just last year and made a strong impression in his debut Championship season, scoring 14 goals. But following Luton’s relegation to League One, the club are now open to selling one of their most valuable players.

Aasgaard made his senior debut for Norway in November, lining up alongside Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard in a 5–0 win over Moldova—where he scored his first international goal.

Following that game, Luton manager Matt Bloomfield praised his midfielder’s composure and quality.

“Thelo is a top performer. We know that. He’s someone who we believe can go on even further in the game and I think what he’s shown for us already is glimpses of that.”

“He’s been great, receives in tight areas and can knit the game together for us, which we love,” he added. “He’s gone away, in elite company and he looks like he’s right at home. It was lovely to sit and watch his game at the weekend.”

With talent, international pedigree, and high potential, Aasgaard could be the creative spark Martin’s Rangers have been searching for.
