A number of Glasgow Rangers fans have hit out at manager Steven Gerrard following comments that he made about Alfredo Morelos after his team’s 1-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday saw them bow out of the Europa League.
The Colombian has been the subject of intense transfer speculation recently, with Football Insider claiming that the ‘Gers are in advanced talks with Lille over a potential £17m move. As per Sky Sports, Gerrard admitted in his post-match interview with BT Sport that the 24-year-old striker “has had his head turned” amid the speculation linking him with a move to the Ligue 1 outfit.

Morelos, who has found the net just once in 2020, endured a tough evening in Germany, failing to record a single shot, losing possession 11 times and playing just seven successful passes before being substituted for Greg Stewart on 77 minutes. [via Sofascore]
The Scottish Sun‘s Robert Grieve did not hold back in his player ratings, giving the Colombian a lowly four and writing: “The sooner he’s sold now the better. In poor shape physically and played like he’s thinking of other things. Been a superb signing for Rangers but now is the time to cash in.”

These ‘Gers fans on Twitter slammed Gerrard over his post-match admission and questioned why he picked Morelos to start if he knew that his focus may have been blurred by recent transfer speculation:

Gerrard just noticing is an issue. Morelos hasn’t been interested for 8 months now. He needed replaced last summer and we fed him another contract to keep him here despite the warning signs. On Morelos, Gerrard has had a nightmare. No dressing it up. No excuses. A pure nightmare.
