Glasgow Rangers: Gerrard confirms private Morelos chat

Alfredo Morelos scores vs St. Mirren

Steven Gerrard has confirmed he had to speak to Alfredo Morelos alone prior to Glasgow Rangers’ Scottish Premiership match against St. Mirren.

The Gers were in Germany last week as they faced Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie. The Ibrox outfit were beaten 1-0 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate, and the Colombia international was far from at his best – he managed a SofaScore rating of just 6.6.

Against the Buddies, though, the 24-year-old was back on top form, scoring twice in a 3-0 victory, and after the match, Gerrard confirmed he had spoken privately to his star striker. He said:

“We spoke to the whole group about Thursday’s performance and how the all-round performance had to be better.

“I did have a private chat with Alfredo about his own performance. He acknowledged the fact that he could have been better.

“But he wasn’t the only one. I think as a group we could have been better on Thursday night.

“There was no finger-pointing individually but I do speak to the players and get a feel for what they are feeling. Alfredo was well aware that he needed to perform a little bit better.”

It certainly was a different Morelos at Ibrox than the one seen in Germany. With two goals, he played a huge part in the Gers’ victory. Gerrard’s words, it appears, had the desired effect on the man who has been linked with a move to Lille this summer.

Gerrard, though, will be hoping that he has got his message across to Morelos, and that he will not have to repeat this trick in the future.
