Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are glad to see progression within the team over the years, but are getting frustrated with the way the squad are playing.

In recent weeks, the Red Devils have dropped points whilst playing like strangers, and even though United sit second in the league, many of the punters believe the season could have been better. United have been up and down for most of the season, after a terrific start to the campaign and a few of Jose Mourinho’s men look far from natural in that famous red kit.

Local rivals Man City have been the runaway leaders for most of the season and all but confirmed champions, meaning this season has been rendered rather pointless in the Premier League. With that in mind, United should continue to look at their long-term rebuild.

While the team still struggle, our barman has stated that some of the players should be looking at the Old Trafford exit door while they can, or risk remaining stagnant, whether it means they have to drop down a level or not. With that in mind, our landlord takes a look at the TWO in mind…

Ander Herrera

The fan favourite has had a tough season so far, rarely featuring in the side and struggling for first-team minutes. All this has been much to the annoyance of many of the regulars, who feel the little Spaniard would show some fight and much needed passion in a team that is lacking in of late.

Herrera could look to move on to gain regular football and it would be a huge miss for the Red Devils if he chose to do so.

Chris Smalling

The defender has been at United for some years now but still plays as if he’s brand new to the team sometimes. He’s never really made the step up to what was thought of him when he moved from Fulham and many of the games he’s played in recent months, he’s been made the scapegoat for errors.

Maybe Smalling would be better off in a mid-table team, where the expectation isn’t as high as it is at Old Trafford. Indeed, taking a step down could even move to save his international career.
