Newcastle are interested in signing Crystal Palace right back Nathaniel Clyne, according to The People. Clyne has been an ever present in the Palace side for the last two seasons and Magpies’ boss Alan Pardew is prepared to move for the defender in the summer.
Newcastle right back Danny Simpson has so far rejected overtures by the club to sign a new long-term contract and Pardew sees Clyne as an ideal replacement. The 20-year-old has already attracted interest from several clubs, including the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United, and is likely to leave Palace in the summer, particularly as their promotion push has stalled in the last couple of months.
Any deal is likely to go to a tribunal with Palace hoping to get at least £3million for their youth team product. Clyne was Palace’s player of the season during 2010-11, a season in which he was an ever-present. He has also been capped at England U-19 and U-21 level.
Pardew is also said to be interested in Clyne’s teammate, Wilfried Zaha, who Palace rejected a move for from Bolton during the January transfer window. Both players are certainly likely to move on during the summer unless Palace can make the play-offs and win promotion but Newcastle are sure to have plenty of competition for both of their signatures.
