Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship was blamed on many factors, one of which was signings like Jose Enrique, who were so bad Charles N’Zogbia had to play left back.
Now however, with Jose Enrique having had a season in the Championship, he looks like a Premier League star and is certainly one of the most in-form left-backs currently in English football.
So much so that rumours are emanating out of White Hart Lane that Harry’s wheeler-dealing could spotlight on the Spaniard, who may well see Champions League football as his way of catching Vicente Del Bosque’s eye and progressing to the national team in what is probably the most ‘up-for-grabs’ position in the Spanish squad.
From Spurs’ point of view, left-back is a position of weakness for sure, not because of Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s own form which is highly underrated by most, but because of Gareth Bale’s coming to prominence on the left wing, meaning the Cameroonian is the only recognised left-back at the club.
The Geordies may well be looking for anything between £8m-10m for the 24-year old, although, that could be reduced if Chris Hughton can be convinced that either Kyle Walker or Kyle Naughton could make the transition from right-back to left-back and be used as a makeweight in the deal.
