Despite progressing into the next round of the EFL Cup, the Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are far from dancing on the tables and ordering champagne on ice.
It’s been a dreadful few weeks for the Red Devils, who had lost three games on the bounce prior to their victory over the Cobblers.
One of the major sources of frustration for the Old Trafford faithful has been the form of Wayne Rooney, who continues to be handed a starting berth by Jose Mourinho.
Rumours today have emerged suggesting the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ was desperate to land the England skipper while in charge of both Chelsea and Real Madrid.
Now, thanks to his recent displays, the United fans on Twitter have been rather vocal in their wishing the Portuguese had been successful in his attempts to land the former Everton prodigy.
Included are SIX of the best reactions to the missed opportunity to sell Rooney.

Time for a change
It’s not just a few games with Rooney. It’s 3 years. 3 years since we’ve had an 8 or 9 out of 10 performance. He’s atrocious now. #MUFC

Never Forget
I would have defended Rooney if he hadn’t requested for a transfer and held us to ransom twice. #mufc. We will never forget!

Iron Fist
SAF would have sold Rooney in 2013. He was a master of getting rid at the right time. Instead we got Moyes who gave him a 5 year deal! #MUFC

Why did we not sell Rooney that moment that Mourinho wanted him for £50m#MUFC
